why is my dog having behavioral problems?
When I leave the house, I leave my dog on a leash and secure it to a door. She is not crate trained and is 4 year old mixed irish setter.
Twice now I have come home and found she has chewed through the leash and is roaming through the house. Before, she has been ok with me leaving her at the last house with this set up. Now at the new house, I am having this problem.
Is it bad to have her roam the house unsupervised? Any solutions or advice?
I would do the same if I was your dog! Does she have access to water and somewhere comfortable to lie down?
What does she do if you let her have the run of the house if you are out? It’s not at all bad as long as you don’t leave anything dangerous lying about. You could always shut the doors to any room you don’t want her in.
Dogs take a while to fully settle into new surroundings – but I think she would settle quicker if she wasn’t constrained. If she is getting anxious about you going put some time aside to go in and out of the house, just for a minute and building up the time so she can cope with being left for longer periods.

NEVER tether a dog….
Crate her when you are not home.. and EXERCISE HER heavily DAILY,, she is a HUNTING DOG… and needs constant exercise, stimulation. geez

Crate training would be a better option. Dogs do chew through leather leashes easily.

shes probobly scared, but idk why it randomly showed up, but dogs get scared when they are tied to things, because there is no escape if something were to unexpectantly happen to the house. i say you let her roam the house, and if there is a specific area you dont want her to go, put gates in front of the openings. its not fair for her to be tied to a door. it is deffinitly not bad for her to roam the house, unless she has major mental issues, and will try running into a door, and hurt herself really bad. just let her roam.
hope i helped!

1. Your dog could very easily become entangled and strangle or if she runs to the end of the leash break her neck.
2. Irish setters have high energy requirements. Take her for a minimum of 1 hour of walking per day.
How long is she left alone? you may need to consider day care. If it’s around 6 hours then invest in a crate and crate train her. If she is well house broken and has proven herself trustworthy in the house (doesn’t eliminate everywhere, doesn’t destroy anything) then let her roam loose. Just make sure there’s nothing she can get into.
